The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named uncapped left-arm spinner Hasan Murad as a replacement for veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in the squad for the upcoming first Test against South Africa.
The match is scheduled to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, starting October 21.
Hasan Murad, 23, has shown impressive form in domestic cricket, taking 136 wickets in just 30 first-class matches since his debut in 2021.
The decision to include him follows Shakib’s announcement that he would not be participating in the Test due to security concerns.
Gazi Ashraf Hossain, the chairman of the BCB National Selection Panel, stated, “We have been informed that Shakib is unavailable for the first Test. Although he is nearing the end of his Test career, his experience is invaluable, and we currently lack someone who can replace him in both batting and bowling.”
However, Hossain expressed confidence in Hasan Murad’s abilities, noting, “He has been consistently performing in first-class cricket and is a part of our system. We believe he will enhance our bowling strength, especially in home conditions.”
Shakib’s withdrawal is related to security issues regarding his return to Bangladesh. He had originally intended to fly from Dubai to Dhaka but received advice from higher authorities to hold off before boarding.
Shakib, who previously served as a lawmaker under the Sheikh Hasina government, has been in the USA due to ongoing political tensions in Bangladesh.
In a statement to bdnews24.com, Shakib said, “I was planning to return home… but now I don’t think that’s possible. It is due to security issues, a matter concerning my own safety.”
The BCB has reportedly advised Shakib to cancel his flight to Dhaka and remain in the USA, complicating his participation in the Test series.
